Michael Graney was appointed Executive Director of the West Virginia Development Office by Governor Jim Justice in 2018 under the West Virginia Department of Commerce. In May 2021, his role was extended to the newly formed West Virginia Department of Economic Development. On October 17, 2024, he was appointed by Governor Justice as Acting Cabinet Secretary of the West Virginia Department of Economic Development.
Graney earned both his BA and MBA from the University of Virginia, with his MBA from the Darden Graduate School of Business in 1990.
Much of his professional career has been spent in executive or co-founder positions in the petroleum industry. In these roles, he managed various aspects of business operations, including acquisition, construction, finance, administration, retail operations, and environmental compliance.
From 1991 to 2015, Graney served as President of One Stop, a West Virginia-based chain of convenience stores.
In addition to his industry experience, Graney has been a member of numerous professional organizations within the oil industry and remains actively involved in various community and non-profit organizations.
